On the Test Day
What Do I Need to Bring?
Here’s a checklist of what you need to bring to your test:
Your current Victorian learner permit card or Proof of Overseas License: If you’re an overseas license holder, provide proof of your overseas license. If it’s not in English, you need an English translation by a qualified translator or an International Driving Permit.
Your appointment number and/or appointment receipt.
(If you are under 21) Learner Log Book: If you’re under 21, bring your Learner Log Book to prove you have completed a minimum of 120 hours of supervised driving experience. The log book must be filled in correctly.
Evidence of Identity: If you don’t have an Australian learner permit with a photo, bring full evidence of identity. Check acceptable documents here.
Payment for Your License: VicRoads accepts Mastercard, Visa, cheque, EFTPOS, or cash.
What Will Be Assessed during the VicRoads Drive Test?
Pre-Drive Check
Before starting the driving part of the test, you must demonstrate your ability to identify and operate the following vehicle controls:
Turn indicators
Brake lights
Horn
Headlights (high and low beam)
Hazard lights
Windscreen washer and wipers
Drive Test Stage One
The first part of the Drive Test occurs in less challenging driving situations. You’ll be asked to:
Turn left and right at intersections
Change lanes
Reverse park or do a three-point turn
Stop the car
The testing officer will then calculate your score for this part of the test. If you pass, you will move on to the second part. If not, you’ll return to the VicRoads Customer Service Centre to receive feedback.
Drive Test Stage Two
The second part of the test takes place on busier roads. You will be assessed on your ability to:
Turn left and right at different intersections
Change lanes
Merge with other traffic
Drive along straight and curved sections of the road
At the end of the test, you will return to the VicRoads Customer Service Centre and receive your results.
After the Test
The testing officer will provide feedback at the VicRoads Customer Service Centre. You will be informed whether you passed or failed. If you fail, the feedback will highlight areas that need improvement, helping you focus your practice before attempting the test again. If you pass, you will get a receipt as proof of your Ps that you can use to drive, until you receive your probationary driver licence card. This receipt is valid for 3 months, or until the day that you receive your probationary driver licence card in the mail.
Why Should I Use a Driving Instructor's Car for the Drive Test?
Using a driving instructor's car for the test has several advantages:
Familiarity: You will be using the same car you practiced in, which means you will be more comfortable and confident during the test.
Safety and Focus: Having an instructor in the car can help the Licence Testing Officer focus more on your driving skills, knowing that the instructor can intervene to prevent accidents.
Witness to Judgement: Licence Testing Officers are human and can make mistakes. Having your instructor as a witness can help if there are any misjudgements or mistakes during the test, ensuring a fair assessment.
